At the climax I ask them to bring their characters to a turning point and make a choice. My kids seem to get a lot of quality writing done with this method. When getting students to do creative writing, I love to have them bring in objects that are important to them from home and then have them develop a piece incorporating that item.

"I'm not sure if eight-year-olds should be permitted to have death or murder references in their short stories," said a New York City public school principal to me at the end of the day today.

"But I'll set a meeting with my teachers tomorrow to discuss your views and theirs and see where we get." Three hours later, I am still moved and humbled by the principal's thoughtful consideration of a topic so new and strange to her. We had discussed a no-censorship approach for this workshop and the children had immediately come to life when they were told they could write a fictional story about anything they wanted.

After some time, I began to imitate writings of famous people.

Then, I began to take notice of how they wrote, how they made a plot and how they developed and ended and how the characters were depicted and etc.

It wasn't any formal teaching or training, just personal effort.

But GOOD READING is v important, in the first place, I think. But by week two, some of the teachers were concerned to see the heavy material that emerged, here and there, throughout the grade, from the special ed class to the "gifted and talented." Human beings young and old love exploring dark, fantastical themes. But what are we supposed to think when our youngest members do it?Perhaps a grammar quiz or an ungraded (I gave students a completion grade) writing assignment. This will help you know where to go with your particular group of students. Educators go through a rigorous application process, and every answer they submit is reviewed by our in-house editorial team. Our certified Educators are real professors, teachers, and scholars who use their academic expertise to tackle your toughest questions. At first they list features of it, describe it, spend time with the item holding it etc. After that they develop a story or poem about why the item is important or a time the item was present at an important time in their lives etc. A few ideas I have used successfully were to give students "beginnings" of stories, just a sentence or two to get them going and then ask them to complete the story and to have a story worked on serially, passing it around from one student to the next.Another thing I like to do is bring in provocative pictures (a man dressed as santa driving a sailboat or a baby with two snakes in its crib etc) and having students create a story inspired by the photo. They seem to like this and it's a good way to break the ice for reluctant writers. They write the exposition and then the rising action, then the climax, etc.For example, for rising action I ask them to give their characters a serious problem and have them begin to respond to it.
