The 2012-2013 academic year has seen seven University of California campuses launch campaigns to divest university funds from corporations enabling oppression of Palestinians.
This essay outlines the roots of the campaign, its progress, and the pressures facing activists working to support Palestinian rights.
They focused their campus’ attention on the role of American corporations, namely General Electric and United Technologies, in enabling and profiting from violence against Palestinians.
In addition to forcing the question of Palestine onto the forefront of student discussions, the campaign elicited the response of the Israeli government and other “pro-Israel” groups in the United States, who responded by arguing that divestment from General Electric and United Technologies was a form of bigotry against Jewish students.
Israeli Consul General Akiva Tor, who personally attended student government hearings, ceded the point that Israel was engaged in human rights abuses against Palestinians, but argued that Palestinian casualties were a necessary cost for Israel’s security.
To complement this justification, Tor repeatedly insisted that, by singling out Israel for scrutiny, the divestment vote would be anti-Semitic.A note on accessibility: Due to the UC Revitalization Project Construction, there is currently no wheelchair-accessible entrance to University College.Since the UC Quad is a high-traffic construction area during this phase of the project, the rear laneway has been blocked and entry must be restricted as a safety precaution. That spring, UC Los Angeles’ student senate passed a bill condemning the attacks and UC San Diego students offered a bill calling for divestment from companies profiting from the attacks on the Gaza Strip.Although UCSD’s bill did not pass, UC Berkeley students offered a similar bill the next spring.ACADEMIC AWARDS, FELLOWSHIPS, GRANTS2018-2019 Michigan State University Inspirational Woman of the Year Award2018-2019 Michigan State University Faculty Leadership Award2018-2019 Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP) Production Grant 2017-2018 Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship 2017-2018 Woodrow Wilson Career Enhancement 12-month Fellowship (declined) 2016 - 2017 LASA Latina/o Studies Section Dissertation Award Honorable Mention 2016 - 2017 GSAH Global Perspectives Colloquia Grant 2015 - 2017 Duke University Mellon Mays SITPA Scholar 2015 - 2016 Hypatia Journal Diversity Essay Prize Winner 2013 - 2014 UC Berkeley Ethnic Studies Department Travel Grant 2013 - 2014 Ford Foundation Dissertation Fellowship Honorable Mention 2012 - 2013 UC Berkeley Metro New York Leaders Fellowship 2010 - 2011 UC Berkeley Dean’s Normative Time Fellowship 2008 - 2009 Ford Foundation Pre-Doctoral Fellowship Honorable Mention 2008 - 2012 UC Berkeley Graduate Division Summer Research Grant 2007 - 2009 UC Berkeley Chancellor’s Fellowship 2006 - 2016 Ronald E.If you're registered at University College, you have access to free one-on-one appointments at the UC Writing Centre. In addition to the mass public protests seen around the country, chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) grew with new members and worked with new urgency.Just as it was impossible to defend Israel’s behavior, it also became impossible to ignore the clear and simple call from Palestinian society for the international community to focus on removing its complicity from immoral acts committed against Palestinians.
