Many studies on homework have settled on the “10-minute rule,” meaning that students’ homework load should be measured in minutes — 10 minutes multiplied by the student’s grade level.

So, a second-grade student should get 20 minutes of homework each night, whereas an eighth grader would get 80 minutes.

Some of the more bizarre questions I remember from my years in the classroom: Those are the ones that catch you off-guard and require quick thinking to answer. Students who displayed sufficient mastery of the lesson during class had no use for busy work to do at home.

But, by far, the top question I received over the years — at least 10 times each meet the teacher day — dealt with homework. If a student struggled with a topic — or a specific portion of a topic — I’d send home a little practice work for him or her to focus on before the next day.

Fatigue can really weight down high school students, who are often loaded with homework from multiple classes, while also facing the oncoming pressures of college — not to mention the physical and hormonal changes occuring during that point in life.

Personally, I had a full-time job at 16 and found that my academics began to suffer because, between school, homework and actual work, there was little time to sleep. In those cases, I saw the homework as not necessarily about academics, but rather a lesson in responsibility — but that approach didn’t work since those parents ended up lobbying the principal to successfully force me to change the students’ grades. Homework can teach students to complete necessary tasks, even if they aren’t fun.As adults, we all have to do similar things in our everyday life.Research has found that sacrificing sleep can lead to academic problems. In younger students, simply getting the proper amount of sleep can increase language skills and improve the chances of academic success — even more so than an increased homework load. This fatigue only worsens over time and often hits its max peak right around March, when most schools are pushing students even harder in anticipation of standardized testing. This fatigue can manifest itself outside of the classroom, too, as it seeps into emotional issues that affect personal and familial relationships. What you should take away from the information above is that not all homework is created equal; ideally, every learning experience you engage in should be meaningful and include components that cater to various learning styles. Let me tell you a little secret that most teachers don’t want you to know.Meet the teacher day is when educators tend to get peppered with dozens of questions over a one-hour period. That’s when I settled on a method that became controversial and lauded at the same time. Yes, that means little Johnny may get three sheets of math homework one night, while his best friend might get none. We didn’t hold a homework lottery at the end of every class. Many of them are repetitive and easy to answer, but some are simply unexpected. I determined the amount of homework assigned by following my students progress in a given topic.
